Meet the diligent and compassionate Pet Refuge ABC Clinic team!
Lane DeMeulenaere, Director of Clinic Operations/R.V.T.
Lane is from Albany, Indiana, and currently lives in Granger with her husband and two young daughters. She has been a Registered Veterinary Technician for 10 years and is a graduate of Ball State University and Harrison College. She has two bully breed rescues, Lincoln and Kaia. Lane enjoys the fast paced environment at the ABC Clinic and impact it has on our community.
Kristen lives in a small town in northern Indiana with her two almost grown daughters, their father, two cats and two dogs. She loves traveling, camping, and going on long nature hikes. Kristen has worked at ABC Clinic since May of 2019 and she absolutely loves it. She wakes up in the morning truly happy to come to work because, to her, the environment has such a great and positive energy. She can’t imagine working anywhere else now.
Sydney is a born and raised Hoosier from Elkhart, Indiana. She has had many family dogs growing up but loves being a dog-mom to Ollie, her Pomeranian, as well as her two cats Brooklyn and Mufasa. She loves working for ABC and being a part of such a great cause that benefits our community.
Dr. Mercedes Gumm is a native of New Carlisle, Indiana. Spending much of her childhood around farm animals, she grew up knowing she would always be a veterinarian. After graduating from Purdue University with a degree in Animal Science, she continued to veterinary school. She received her
Doctorate from St. George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine, Grenada, West Indies in January 2019. After studying abroad Dr. Mercedes moved back to South Bend with her fiancée Jeffrey and their dog Moose. They welcomed their baby girl Lucey into the world in August 2019. In her free time she loves to travel, be outdoors, and spend time with her family.
Dr. Sarah Weiss graduated from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine in 2016. She has been working at ABC and Pet Refuge since July 2019, and loves the opportunity to interact with multiple patients daily and perform surgery. When she’s not at ABC or Pet Refuge, Dr. Weiss stays busy reading, hiking, crocheting, and spending time with her husband and son. She also has three cats named Patches, Misty, and Sokka; and a turtle named Toby.
Dr. Marie Bertman began caring for animals while volunteering at the Wisconsin Humane Society in Milwaukee during college. She received her Doctorate from the University of Wisconsin Madison School of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. Her work experience includes private practices in Chicago and Idaho, as well as being Chief of Staff for a corporate practice in Los Angeles for five years. She loves cats, dogs, internal medicine, and soft tissue surgery. Dr. Bertman and her husband have a full house with their dogs, Piper and Knuckles, and three little girls.
Kimberly Landis has worked at ABC Clinic since it opened in June of 2011. She studied animal science at Black Hawk College in Kewanee, IL. Kimberly lives in South Bend with her husband Mark. She has been blessed with 3 children and 2 grandchildren. Kimberly has really enjoyed being at the ABC Clinic since the opening and being able to witness first hand the affect the clinic has had on our community.
Kayleigh has always wanted to work with animals. Growing up, she always had pets in the home she cherished. During high school, Kayleigh focused on veterinary technology. She attended Brown Mackie, where she received an Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology. Kayleigh has enjoyed working in veterinary clinics for many years, two of those years being in California. Along with multiple fur-babies at home, her and her husband welcome their baby boy, Nolan.
Aly is currently enrolled with Penn Foster and is working hard to become an RVT. She started at the ABC Clinic in 2019 and loves the team environment. To say she loves animals is an understatement as she currently owns dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, rabbits, hamsters, and her adored pig. Aly and her husband Tommy, have two kids, Shelby and Colton. Her hobbies are enjoying time with family, watching her children in their sports, spending time on their little farm, and relaxing in their pond on summer days and nights.
Mary grew up in Plymouth IN where she currently resides with her husband and 3 dogs: Echo, Ruger, and Aries. Growing up, she was a 10 year member of the 4-H dog club and participated in dog shows around Indiana. In her free time Mary enjoys hunting, fishing, kayaking and camping. She has been part of the ABC team since November 2019 and is excited to continue making a difference.
